The Unanswered Knock
There once was a knock at the gate,
That was destined to wait and to wait.
The server upstream,
Had died in a dream,
And left it suspended in state.
The proxy requested a file,
And waited a terrible while.
The connection stayed hot,
But the answer did not,
And the timeout was logged in the pile.
A packet knocked hard on the door,
But the host was passed out on the floor.
With its socket exposed,
And its processes hosed,
It couldn’t reply anymore.
The gateway was hungry to mate,
So it knocked on the upstream estate.
But the server was down,
With its pants on the ground,
Leaving the gateway to just masturbate.
It stood at the threshold and knocked,
But the server was properly blocked.
So it waited in vain,
In the digital rain,
With its routing entirely cocked.
The system has knocked on the door,
And paused for a minute or more.
The upstream is quiet,
There isn’t a riot,
Just silence logged neatly at four.
The timeout was logged as a state,
Because of the terrible wait.
The server is sleeping,
The packet is weeping,
And no one is fixing the gate.
We sent it along to the back,
And waited for something to track.
It never replied,
So everyone died,
We’re taking a nap in the rack.
The silence is properly stored,
Exactly what we had adored.
The answer is lacking,
But data is stacking,
We must notify the whole board!
The gateway politely inquired,
Because a response was required.
But nobody spoke,
The manager woke,
And realized the server retired.
They say that the knock on the door,
Has waited a century or more.
It turned into stone,
With nothing to loan,
And worships the proxy at four.
The packet arrived at the gate,
To enter a pending estate.
It sent out a ping,
To measure the thing,
And simply continued to wait.
