Sitemap Drift
The sitemap grew gently untrue,
Still valid in all that it drew.
Every path had a shape,
Just the wrong kind of drape,
Like a map made by vibes and old glue.
You clicked on a topic called “Bread,”
And arrived at “Mild Dread” instead.
Not broken, just near.
Which is somehow more weird
Than a flat 404 in the head.
The links all resolved clean and bright,
Which made every complaint harder to write.
“It works,” said the chart.
“Just not in the part
Where meaning and destination unite.”
One user described, with a frown,
A page that felt next-door downtown.
Not wrong in the skin,
But wrong deep within,
Like the site had misplaced its own town.
No errors were thrown in the logs.
No alarms, no distressed sysadmin dogs.
Only structure so neat
It led every feet
To the edges of neighboring bogs.
The hierarchy looked fucking grand:
Good branches, clean nodes, tidy land.
But the content below
Had the wrong undertow.
It was order with no guiding hand.
You could browse for an hour with grace
And never once reach the right place.
That sort of decay
Doesn’t bar your way.
It just smiles and edits your pace.
An analyst said, “This is drift.”
A manager called it “a gift.”
“Engagement is up.”
“That’s because we’re all stuck.”
“Well then metrics suggest it’s a lift.”
The pages felt cousin-adjacent,
Like archives with borrowed emplacement.
If rot wants to flirt,
It won’t tear up the dirt.
It will misfile the whole arrangement.
So if every click seems to imply
That the site has one wandering eye,
Trust your unease first.
A clean path may be cursed
When the sitemap has learned how to lie.
The index began to take walks,
Away from the logic and talks.
It built a new street,
That was strangely complete,
But haunted by digital hawks.
You found a new page in the list,
That the developers surely had missed.
It wasn’t quite wrong,
But it didn’t belong,
And it dissolved in a fine, glitchy mist.
You wander a seamless white hall,
With no 404s on the wall.
The links are pristine,
But the content unseen,
And you can’t find your way back at all.
The structure created a poem,
While leading you far from your home.
Each branch was a rhyme,
Out of context and time,
In a sitemap that wanted to roam.
A path that was never laid out,
Began to cast shadows of doubt.
It works perfectly well,
But leads straight into hell,
And you’re left with a permanent pout.
