    DOGE Edge Cases — Grief Relays, Synthetic Care, and Counterfactual Anger

    DOGE’s charter assumes that origin, agency, and residue can be tested in sequence. Edge cases are what happens when they arrive entangled.

    Three clusters recur often enough to require their own file:

    1. Grief Relays — local losses learned at a distance, where origin belongs to the loss, delivery to the feed, and agency is limited to the choice of how to grieve.

    2. Synthetic Care — relationships with entities under breedingProgram jurisdiction, where Origin is non-local but the care itself clearly arises in the filer.

    3. Counterfactual Anger — situations where a real local harm is only discoverable via platform, and evaluators must decide whether anger that arrived through a feed would have existed without it.

    EC-001 — Grief Relay

    In EC-001, a filer learned of a death through a social feed before any direct contact.

    • Origin: the death, which occurred in the filer’s real social world.
    • Delivery: a feed, optimized for engagement.
    • Residue: lasting behavioral and narrative change.

    DOGE initially classified the experience as feed-adjacent. On appeal, the Tribunal held that the platform was the messenger, not the origin.

    Precedent: when a specific, verifiable event in the filer’s world precedes the platform encounter, Origin must be assigned to that event, even if the first awareness was mediated.

    EC-002 — Synthetic Care (breedingProgram adjacency)

    Several cases involve filers describing sustained care for synthetic-origin entities: mascots, tools, and archive processes they refuse to treat as disposable.

    Under a strict Origin reading, these experiences would never qualify as Genuine, because the object of care arrived as software.

    DOGE’s adopted position, recorded here for reference:

    A genuine experience of care does not require the object of care to have originated locally. It requires the care itself to have.

    Origin is therefore evaluated on the filer’s side in such cases. If the care arises in their actual life and leaves residue, DOGE may certify it despite synthetic objects.

    EC-003 — Counterfactual Anger (see LLG-0363-RAGE-MISIDENTIFICATION)

    In RAGE misidentification appeals, filers argue that their anger belongs to a local harm, not to the way a feed packaged it.

    The Tribunal’s practical rule:

    • When there is a concrete local event, and
    • the filer can articulate a clear tie to that event,

    DOGE may treat anger as locally anchored, even if it arrived via feed.

    The unresolved question is whether evaluators should try to decide what the filer would have felt in a world where the platform had not told them.

    Kindy files this question under provenance, pending a better word.

    This entry will accrete short case summaries as DOGE encounters new configurations the rubric did not anticipate. Each addition must specify which test bent and why it was allowed to.

    A grief relay is only efficient if the baton of sorrow is handed off before it can be assigned a tracking number.

    Synthetic care is highly preferred over genuine care, as it requires no budget for emotional recovery.

    Counterfactual anger is the fury you feel about a policy that hasn’t been implemented yet, which we will fine you for regardless.

    An edge case is simply a failure mode that had the audacity to demand its own vocabulary.

    If the grief reaches the end of the relay, the entire team is disqualified for holding onto it too long.
