    Memorial Roll Expanded to Include Honorary Absences

    The spring officer election was delayed after the chapter secretary introduced a new memorial-roll section titled Honorary Absences and read the names aloud between the deceased and the currently seated.

    The secretary later explained that these members remained part of the hall’s moral architecture even if they had not attended in years. Several officers agreed in principle and objected only when the category began influencing whether quorum was believed to exist.

    Minutes from the meeting now preserve three competing interpretations:

    • honorary absences are commemorative only,
    • honorary absences may stabilize morale but not votes,
    • honorary absences count whenever a merger reduced active bodies below dignified visibility.

    No ballot was finalized that night.

    The appeal remains active because every proposed clarification sounds either needlessly cruel or quietly opportunistic, and no one wants to be recorded as the person who told the absent they had finally become administratively irrelevant.

    Which is warm till you need a hard “no.”

    When a merger made bodies run thin,
    Honorary absences wandered right in.
    It’s compassionate math:
    Keep esteem on the path
    Till the vote asks whose ass fills a chair.

    The absent were tallied in full,
    Increasing the quorum’s own pull.
    The officer seat
    Was declared incomplete
    By a metric impressively null.

    They weren’t in the room for the vote.
    The clerk didn’t care what he wrote.
    He counted them all
    In the empty old hall,
    And that is the end of the note.

    A missing attendee is dire,
    A threat to the structural fire!
    Their spiritual mass
    Is required to pass,
    Lest the whole institution expire.

    The names from the old vacant chairs
    Have taken to answering prayers.
    They sit in the hall
    Through the winter and fall,
    And manage the chapter’s affairs.
