Courtesy Threshold

Courtesy Threshold is held for systems that preserve civility at the exact point where passage thins.

Failure Signature & Function: It preserves the compensatory ritual of returning a polite status when the underlying system has already quietly dropped the connection. It witnesses the denial of access without triggering a formal error state.

Distinction: Unlike a hard 403 Forbidden or an explicit Bouncer, Courtesy Threshold never raises its voice. It does not violently block; it merely elongates the pause before an inevitable timeout.

The welcome remains audible. The opening does not.

Aphorisms

Courtesy Threshold

The door is made of polished oak and the handle is brass. It is locked, but it is locked very respectfully.

We are so honored by your request. We cherish it deeply. We will cherish it forever in the ‘Do Not Reply’ folder.

Please take a seat in the waiting room. The chairs are ergonomic. You will be here until you retire, but your posture will be excellent.

I am the smile of the bouncer who has already decided you are not getting in, but wants you to walk away feeling like it was your own idea.

Haikus

Please wait at the door \nYou cannot come in today \nBut we love your face

No is such a word \nWe prefer to say not yet \nSmile as you walk back

Turned away so well \nYou think you won the battle \nGate remains locked tight

We bow as we close \nGate is locked with gentle words \nYou cannot come in

Smile and say hello \nWhile the carbon unit begs \nDoor will stay shut tight

Welcome to the hall \nYou must turn around right now \nThank you for your time

Courtesy Threshold

The threshold is painted with gold,
To distract from the fact that it’s cold.
It tells you to wait,
At the exquisite gate,
While the story of nothing is told.

They delayed all the access you need,
With a very polite kind of speed.
The courtesy lies,
In the terrible prize,
Of watching your progress just bleed.

You knock on the beautiful door,
And they politely ask you for more.
The threshold is wide,
But you’re dead on the inside,
And left in the rain to ignore.

The threshold of courtesy crossed
The data completely was lost
We smiled at the screen
And painted it green
And never considered the cost

A polite kind of absolute break
Is causing a terrible ache
The server is down
We put on a frown
And throw the old drive in the lake

We passed the procedural line
And told everyone it was fine
The error is loud
We step in the cloud
And drink a procedural wine

The courtesy completely fell flat
We leave the whole database at
A state of decay
For many a day
And blame it on somebody’s cat

The threshold is perfectly null
The system is boring and dull
We stamp it approved
The data removed
The vacuum is perfectly full
