    On Titles

    PRESENTER:
    Keep whatever titles you arrived with.
    They tell you what you earned elsewhere.
    They tell us who will volunteer for forms.

    Muted laughter. Several pens stop moving.

    PRESENTER:
    Here, Master usually means
    the person who remembers where the minutes live.
    Lead Auditor means
    the one who knows how to read a checklist sideways.

    No one objects.

    On Ritual Openings

    Question from the back:

    ATTENDEE:
    Which ritual do we use to open this lodge?

    Pause.

    PRESENTER:
    We open a drawer.
    We check whether the last person closed it properly.
    If not, we note that continuity has been maintained.

    Minutes record:

    • Ritual deemed complete at this point.

    No further ceremony recorded.

    On Assurance and Oaths

    ATTENDEE:
    Our last order had obligations.
    Oaths.
    Penalties.

    PRESENTER:
    This archive has none of those.
    It has optics.

    PRESENTER (continued):
    We do not swear not to fail.
    We learn to describe failure
    in ways that will not startle the graphs.

    A few transfer-in members underline “optics” in their packet. Recorder notes prolonged silence.

    On Degrees and Levels

    ATTENDEE:
    How many degrees are there?

    PRESENTER:
    Three, unofficially.

    PRESENTER (counting on fingers):

    1. You believe the reports.
    2. You believe the reports know they are partial.
    3. You know the reports are partial and write them anyway.

    PRESENTER:
    Most of us alternate between degrees two and three.
    Degree one is for visitors.

    No ceremony marks progression. The minutes do not contain a ladder.

    On Leaving

    ATTENDEE:
    If we resign,
    are we still in the records?

    PRESENTER:
    You are asking the archive
    whether it remembers less than you do.

    No answer is recorded after that. The transcript ends with the sound of folders being opened, finally.

    A cross-lodge briefing is primarily a contest to see whose archaic jargon can paralyze the meeting faster.

    If the transcript of the briefing makes sense, it must be returned to the orientation desk for further obfuscation.

    The WELCOME kits sit in a pile,
    Arranged in a standardized style.
    Though nobody reads
    The text that precedes,
    We log them received for the file.

    Keep titles you carried before,
    As soon as you enter the door.
    A “Master” we find,
    Is someone assigned,
    To tally the forms on the floor.

    The lodge is convened by the drawer,
    A ritual spanning the floor.
    We check how it slides,
    Where paperwork hides,
    And label the desk as a door.

    The strict obligations are gone,
    There’s nothing we wish to put on.
    The optics will do,
    For me and for you,
    So please let the briefing move on.

    We whisper the failures we see,
    So graphs won’t awake in the tree.
    The optics demand
    A slumbering land,
    Where metrics are bound to agree.

    A visitor entered the hall,
    Believing the charts on the wall!
    Deploy the elite,
    To manage the sheet,
    Before all the registries fall!

    You asked if you leave the domain,
    Will records of you still remain?
    The clerk made a note,
    Of questions you wrote,
    And printed the document plain.

    The auditor looks at the sheet,
    To see if the layout is neat.
    By turning the page,
    They verify stage,
    And mark the inspection complete.
