Empathegy Taxonomy
Status
Empathegy 2.0 requires a shared taxonomy so that emotional activity may be preserved as legible institutional matter without requiring interpersonal interpretation at point of contact.
This document does not define what people feel. It defines what the system can retain, route, compare, and govern.
Where feeling exceeds category, category remains authoritative for operational purposes.
Foundational Premise
Within Empathegy, affect is not actionable at the moment of expression.
Affective material becomes actionable only after it has been:
- noticed,
- normalized,
- classified,
- rendered into continuity-safe language,
- attached to an admissible intervention surface.
Raw feeling is therefore treated as pre-governance substrate.
Primary State Classes
1. Unrendered Affect
Definition: Emotional expression present in human reality but not yet admitted into system representation.
Characteristics:
- narrative
- contradictory
- context-dependent
- difficult to compare across individuals or teams
- often interpreted as sincere but procedurally incomplete
Operational Handling:
- hold for intake
- do not escalate directly
- route toward translation surfaces
- mark as pending legibility
Notes: Unrendered Affect is not considered invalid. It is considered unprepared.
2. Classifiable Affect
Definition: Affective material that has been sufficiently normalized to enter a sanctioned category without breaking comparative consistency.
Characteristics:
- recognizable signal pattern
- consistent enough to be grouped
- mappable to existing dashboards or case structures
- eligible for trend treatment
Operational Handling:
- assign category
- attach severity band
- permit dashboard inclusion
- preserve as managed input
Notes: Classifiable Affect is the minimum threshold for institutional attention.
3. Governable Affect
Definition: Classified affect that can be acted upon through an approved operational pathway.
Characteristics:
- already normalized
- attached to an escalation path or ritual container
- eligible for administrative action
- legible to continuity systems
Operational Handling:
- assign owner
- route to intervention layer
- measure follow-through
- report as governance activity
Notes: Not all classifiable affect becomes governable. If no stable process can hold it, it remains visible but administratively thin.
4. Dashboard-Safe Affect
Definition: Governable affect whose representation does not destabilize aggregate reporting or executive interpretation.
Characteristics:
- compressible
- trend-compatible
- non-contradictory under presentation
- graphable without significant annotation burden
Operational Handling:
- include in reporting layer
- permit comparative indexing
- use in summary decks
- weight for continuity scoring
Notes: Dashboard-Safe Affect is often mistaken for resolved affect. This is a category error, but a common one.
5. Visibility-Excluded Affect
Definition: Affective states operationally present but omitted from aggregate visibility due to incoherence, contradiction, volatility, or rendering cost.
Characteristics:
- difficult to linearize
- low curve coherence
- mixed signals
- high annotation load
- not absent, only underrepresented
Operational Handling:
- preserve in annex or local record
- exclude from top-line score outputs
- prohibit interpretation of exclusion as non-existence
Notes: Visibility exclusion is a measurement limit, not a disappearance event.
Stability Bands
Stable
Expression remains within expected interpretive variance and can be preserved without substantial translation loss.
Transitional
Expression is changing in form or intensity but remains classifiable with moderate annotation.
Volatile
Expression exceeds routine smoothing tolerance and resists low-friction representation.
Fragmented
Expression contains contradiction, simultaneity, rupture, or recurrence that prevents continuous rendering.
Residual
Signal remains after formal closure, indicating that administrative completion and emotional completion have diverged.
Continuity Classes
Continuity-Sufficient
A condition in which operations continue without immediate structural breach, regardless of unresolved burden.
Continuity-Positive
A condition in which system function is preserved and representation remains interpretively stable.
Continuity-Ambiguous
A condition in which work continued, but cost attribution remains disputed or split across directive layers.
Continuity-Negative
A condition in which affective disruption creates measurable operational variance.
Continuity-Theatrical
A condition in which continuity appears stronger in representation than in lived system reality.
Burden Classes
Burden-Visible
Strain acknowledged in both local and reporting surfaces.
Burden-Shadowed
Strain preserved in side channels, annexes, hover states, or witness notes, but not in headline outputs.
Burden-Displaced
Strain rerouted into adjacent systems such as gratitude, participation, compliance, or aesthetic correction.
Burden-Silenced
Strain inferred from absence, suppression, or managed non-filing rather than direct expression.
Burden-Absorbed
Strain normalized into role expectation and no longer recognized as a deviation.
Contradiction Classes
Dual-Certified State
A single interval or subject simultaneously classified as continuity success and burden-positive without resolution.
Interpretive Split
A condition in which two or more governance layers preserve incompatible readings of the same evidence.
Sanctioned Ambiguity
A contradiction explicitly allowed to remain unresolved for the sake of institutional legibility.
Compression Loss
Meaning removed during translation from lived affect into metrics, category, or summary language.
Representational Drift
Accumulated divergence between what the system displays and what participating humans would recognize as the event.
Event Types
Distress Spike
A short-duration escalation visible enough to produce local concern but not necessarily long enough to alter aggregate trend.
Transient Instability Event
A temporary disruption in emotional coherence requiring stabilization language and monitoring.
Low-Variance Stability State
A period of reduced expressive fluctuation that may indicate calm, fatigue, suppression, or reporting exhaustion.
Recurrence Loop
The reappearance of substantially similar affective conditions after administrative closure.
Quiet Interval
An incident-light period requiring paired interpretation before being treated as relief.
Managed Acknowledgment Event
A recorded act of institutional recognition that may or may not correspond to material change.
Prohibited Category Mistakes
The following interpretive shortcuts are prohibited:
- Exclusion from reporting does not mean the state was absent.
- Acknowledgment does not equal mitigation.
- Stability does not equal wellbeing.
- Gratitude does not equal relief.
- Silence does not equal rest.
- Repetition does not equal resolution.
- Surface coherence does not equal underlying correctness.
Archive Note
Empathegy preserves those emotional states most compatible with repeated institutional reading. This is a feature of the system and a distortion within it.
The taxonomy exists to stabilize that distortion, not to eliminate it.

A feeling arrived with a face,
