Scoring Layer
Purpose
This document defines the Scoring Layer, the evaluative surface through which Empathegy converts uneven, partial, contradictory, or burden-bearing conditions into ranked, comparable, transportable numerical outputs.
A score is not the condition itself. It is the condition after admissibility, weighting, compression, and institutional preference have already acted on it.
Foundational Rule
A Scoring Layer exists when:
- a condition is rendered into one or more numerical outputs,
- the output travels more easily than the source condition,
- weighting rules privilege some signals over others,
- the resulting score begins influencing interpretation, priority, or confidence beyond what the underlying evidence can cleanly support.
The number does not need to be false. It only needs to become easier to trust than the contradiction it came from.
Core Premise
Scores are what institutions produce when they need a condition to move.
Narrative burden is slow. Contradiction is expensive. Quiet is ambiguous. Witness notes are difficult to compare. A score solves these problems by reducing them into a form that can cross dashboards, reviews, and executive packets without carrying all of the original friction.
This makes scoring useful. It also makes it dangerous.
Primary Score Families
1. Contact Score
Measures whether a care-shaped interaction occurred.
Examples:
- check-in completed,
- acknowledgment prompt answered,
- witness contact logged,
- support touch registered.
A high Contact Score indicates visible contact, not relief.
2. Coverage Score
Measures the percentage of subjects, units, or intervals that received countable supportive contact.
Examples:
- weekly support reach,
- acknowledgment completion rate,
- percentage touched by care ritual,
- support surface participation.
Coverage is about reach. It is not proof of sufficiency.
3. Continuity Compatibility Score
Measures how easily a condition can coexist with ongoing operations without visibly disrupting continuity surfaces.
Examples:
- dashboard-stable distress,
- low-variance burden traces,
- smoothly rendered strain,
- quiet intervals inheriting positive weight.
This family often favors manageable distress over disruptive truth.
4. Care Visibility Score
Measures the density of preserved care signals available to the system.
Examples:
- witness note count,
- gratitude telemetry,
- recorded listening events,
- reassurance artifacts attached,
- support language survivability.
Visibility can rise while support depth remains unchanged.
5. Relief Confidence Score
Estimates, often weakly, whether conditions may have improved.
Examples:
- reduced recurrence,
- burden proxy decline,
- decreased complaint intensity,
- post-action stability.
This score family is the most easily overclaimed because institutions want it to mean more than the evidence permits.
Weighting Rules
Every score is downstream of weighting.
Common weighting preferences include:
- favoring signals that are easy to preserve,
- favoring interactions that collapse into one action,
- discounting contradictory testimony,
- rewarding smooth trajectories over jagged ones,
- treating quiet as positive unless burden reasserts itself loudly,
- privileging comparable inputs over meaningful but unruly ones.
Weighting is a practical architecture, not a neutral mirror.
Confidence Bands
All scores should carry confidence conditions.
High Confidence
Inputs are consistent, preserved, and interpretively narrow.
Moderate Confidence
Inputs are present but mixed, compressed, or partially contradictory.
Low Confidence
The score is directionally useful but evidentially thin.
Decorative Confidence
The score mainly reassures presentation layers.
A score with weak evidence may still be operationally influential. This is common and should be marked.
Common Failure Modes
- Legibility Bias: cleaner signals outrank truer but less portable ones.
- Compression Drift: narrative contradiction is thinned until the score looks more decisive than the source.
- Weighting Concealment: preference structures disappear behind apparent numerical neutrality.
- Relief Inflation: contact, coverage, or gratitude are misread as evidence of improvement.
- Silence Promotion: ambiguous quiet inherits optimistic scoring weight.
- Score Capture: teams begin adjusting expression to fit what the scoring layer preserves best.
Review Questions
Ask:
- What was scored?
- What was excluded before scoring?
- Which signals received more weight than others?
- What contradiction became less visible after numerical translation?
- Does the score indicate contact, visibility, continuity, or actual relief?
- What downstream decision now trusts this number?
If Questions 2, 3, and 5 are hard to answer, the score is doing more rhetorical work than analytic work.
Handling Guidance
When the Scoring Layer is active:
- preserve the score and its source class separately,
- name the score family directly,
- attach confidence language,
- prohibit relief claims that outrun the score type,
- preserve contradictory residue in annex or witness form,
- note known weighting preferences when they matter materially.
Minimum note: Score present; source class narrower than summary effect.
Stronger note: Numerical clarity increased while underlying contradiction remained partly unresolved.

Preferred phrases:

- continuity-compatible score should not be moralized
- score confidence limited by compression
Disallowed phrases:
- the number speaks for itself
- high score confirms adequate care
- clean trend proves healthy conditions
- stability score equals relief
- coverage and outcome are equivalent
Archive Position
The Scoring Layer is how contradiction learns to travel as arithmetic.
Empathegy keeps the number and the remainder together where possible.
