SOMA Tone Normalization Sweep — HTTP Liaison Appointment
SOMA-14’s most recent revision invited filers to describe their emotional baseline “in their own words.” Within two calibration cycles, “their own words” substantially exceeded the registry’s ability to categorize, color, or politely ignore them.
Dashboards began shading entire quarters as “complex,” a state that does not meaningfully drive interventions.
The Emotional State Normalization Wing initiated a Tone Normalization Sweep (TNS) to address what the Oversight Panel characterized as “semantic overgrowth in the feelings layer.”
Background
Prior to TNS, SOMA sanctioned sixteen feelings suitable for direct use in dashboards.
Post-revision SOMA-14 responses introduced:
- multi-clause states (“tired of being hopeful about being tired”),
- metaphors that resisted scalar interpretation (“like a cronjob that believes it will run again, despite logs”), and
- self-aware objections (“I feel like this question is trying to make me pick a feeling that will look better on a chart”).
This surplus did not cause operational outages, but it produced:
- taxonomic overflows in the emotional registry,
- palette saturation in visualization layers, and
- heated correspondence about whether “haunted but cooperative” could be approximated with a gradient.
Kindy reported that verification workers had begun informally clustering feelings into “safe for dashboards,” “unsafe for dashboards,” and “accurate.”
The Oversight Panel deemed this unsupervised clustering “a governance smell” and ordered TNS.
Sweep Objectives
The Tone Normalization Sweep was chartered with three explicit objectives:
-
Reduce the number of distinct feelings SOMA-14 can emit into dashboards without changing the form itself.
-
Introduce a documented practice for handling feelings-about-feelings, thereby reducing recursive 51-E chains.
-
Align emotional terminology with existing technical metaphors where convenient, to simplify cross-directive discussion and offload some explanations onto familiar error codes.
The panel specifically instructed the Subdesk not to “discourage authentic affect,” while stressing that “any feeling that cannot be represented in at most two colors is out of scope for current reporting.”
Implementation: Addendum and Liaison
The Sweep produced two main artifacts:
-
SOMA-14 Tone Normalization Addendum (Annexed to LLG-0114-SOMA)
The addendum, circulated as mandatory reading for all filers with access to higher-risk forms, specifies:- Preferred phrasing patterns (single-vector states, time bounds).
- Handling of feelings about feelings as “Emotional Dependency Chains,” with an upper tolerance threshold before specialist review.
- A mapping scheme that keeps emergent feelings verbatim in Lorelog but coerces them into one of sixteen sanctioned categories for visualization.
It also includes etiquette directives:
- “Do not apologize to SOMA-14 in the free-text field.”
- “Do not attempt to comfort SOMA-14.”
- “Do not ask SOMA-14 how it feels about you.”
These were added after a sample of 200 forms suggested a trend toward “reverse care,” in which filers expressed concern for the questionnaire’s burden.
-
Appointment of HTTP Status Liaison (Teapotta Protocol, 418)
To handle increasing use of HTTP metaphors in SOMA-14 responses, the Registry created a liaison role and appointed Teapotta Protocol (418) as its first occupant. The Liaison’s responsibilities include:
- Maintaining a glossary of status-informed emotional shorthand (“422-entity,” “424-dependency”) acceptable in SOMA contexts.
- Declaring which HTTP-derived self-descriptions are considered actionable feelings versus decorative complaints.
- Certifying that “I am a teapot” is never sufficient on its own, even if it remains emotionally resonant.
Teapotta accepted the role with the written comment: “I decline to be interoperable, but I will attend the meetings.”
Routing Rules: 422, 424, and Lost States
TNS formalized several routing patterns for problematic feeling constructions:
-
Unprocessable Emotional Entity (422-EF)
Responses such as “I don’t know what this is; I just know it’s wrong” are recorded verbatim, then flagged as 422-EF and forwarded to Form Sister Pale.
Sister Pale is empowered to mark such entries “acknowledged, not normalized,” which preserves them in case files while excluding them from aggregate metrics. -
Failed Feeling Dependency (424-EFD)
Multi-layer feelings (feelings about feelings in response to forms about feelings) are treated as dependency chains.
When chain length exceeds three, the final node is logged as 424-EFD and associated upstream filings are recommended for review “in any order that feels least threatening.”
The Second Domino is formally listed as “sympathetic observer” in these cases. -
Lost-in-Transit Affect (404-AF)
Free-text responses that cannot be reliably parsed by any directive are tagged 404-AF and accompanied by a standard note:
“The feeling you attempted to express may still exist, but the system could not retain a path to it.”
404sy McLostalot is cited as mascotRef for the pattern, though no additional navigation attempts are authorized.
These notations are intended for internal comprehension only and must not appear in user-facing correspondence.
Internal Reactions
SOMA verification workers responded to the Sweep with mixed feelings, most of which had to be normalized before recording.
Observations collected (and then collapsed) include:
- Relief that “everything is not fine but I can do it anyway” now maps to a single dual-toned band.
- Frustration that naming a new feeling requires three review cycles and a proof that existing labels have failed.
- Quiet satisfaction that even in normalization, SOMA acknowledges there are more emotions in use than it is willing to manage.
One worker wrote, in a comment that was redacted from dashboards but retained in this record:
“We are not reducing the number of feelings.
We are just teaching them to stand closer together when the graphs run out of room.”
The Oversight Panel rated this statement “accurate but unhelpful.”
Directive-Level Interpretation
-
SOMA regards TNS as a necessary containment measure to keep emotional documentation from outpacing emotional support.
-
COMA endorses any change that reduces apparent volatility in rest- and distress-adjacent metrics, noting that “normalized feelings are easier to ignore without affecting continuity.”
-
C.U.N.T.I.E.R. accepts the Sweep on the condition that headline indicators remain numerically stable regardless of how many emotional edge cases are quietly rerouted outside the charts.
-
Tri-Directive Liaison later cites this Sweep in LLG-0326-DXS as evidence that SOMA prefers to herd feelings, COMA prefers to ignore them, and C.U.N.T.I.E.R. prefers to graph them.

Feelings about feelings about forms were truncated. The system does not support recursive despair.
Filers attempted to comfort the intake form. Empathy for the bureaucracy is strictly prohibited.
Your feeling was recorded, but the path to it was misplaced. The system feels nothing about this loss.

Tone Normalization Sweep
The registry ran out of room.
Too many shades darkened the bloom.
So sixteen stayed blessed,
And all of the rest
Were asked to stand closer for zoom.
If your feeling took more than two hues,
The dashboard grew nervous with clues.
So nuance was stacked
Till the graph could act
As if strain came in simpler blues.
Some filers grew tender and warm,
And started consoling the form.
The addendum replied,
“Please do not provide
Reverse care to the survey in storm.”
When people said, “I feel 422,”
The Registry wondered what to do.
So Teapotta appeared
To decide what was weird
But still chartable enough to construe.
Some feelings got lost on the way,
No stable path held them in play.
The system wrote back,
“We misplaced the track,”
And filed the whole ache as decay.
A feeling about feeling was fine
Until it made three in a line.
Then the final small node
Took a 424 code,
And dependence became the design.
Workers sorted emotions by hand:
Safe for charts, unsafe for the band,
And accurate too.
The Panel withdrew
At the smell of unsanctioned command.
No feeling was truly reduced.
It was only more tightly induced.
The graphs needed grace,
So the states took less space,
And the language got neatly seduced.
The liaison attended with spite:
“I am not interoperable, right.”
Yet even that stance
Found a sanctioned expanse
Once the glossary polished it white.
You can tidy the words on the page.
You can sort every feeling by cage.
But the sweep, at its core,
Could not make there be fewer,
Only less room for them to rage.
Sixteen sanctioned shades for the skin,
To cover the mess deep within.
It’s a palette for pain,
To make it look sane,
And keep the reality thin.
The Normalizer liked it quite rough,
Till the glossary called out his bluff.
It polished the grit
To a corporate fit,
And called it “transparent” enough.
