Annex Recovery

Purpose

This document defines how Empathegy recovers burden, contradiction, and care meaning after that meaning has fallen out of primary visibility.

Annex Recovery does not restore the original event. It restores enough interpretive structure to prevent the archive from lying more neatly than the event occurred.

The doctrine exists because headline systems routinely survive by shedding meaning.

Foundational Rule

Annex Recovery may be initiated when:

1. a surface record remains but its meaning is visibly thinned,
2. a contradiction survives only in side channels,
3. an event is cited as resolved without sufficient reconstructive basis,
4. burden, care, or interpretive disagreement remains recoverable through secondary traces,
5. the archive judges that recovery effort is lower cost than total semantic surrender.

Recovery is therefore a doctrine of partial salvage.

Recoverability Premise

Not all events are equally recoverable.

Some survive as:

• annex notes,
• witness statements,
• hover text,
• discarded field copies,
• Lorelog fragments,
• mascot residue,
• contested guidance,
• Low-Confidence Objects,
• managed-absence references.

These traces do not prove the whole event. They establish that the surface account is insufficient.

Recovery Classes

1. Annex-Supported Recovery

Meaning is reconstructed from formal side-channel materials attached to the event.

Common sources:

• annex notes,
• shadow interpretation fields,
• non-headline dashboard layers,
• auxiliary review comments.

2. Witness-Supported Recovery

Meaning is reconstructed through records whose main function was preservation rather than action.

Common sources:

• witness protocol notes,
• contradiction markers,
• ritual lodge acknowledgments,
• preserved non-remedial statements.

3. Lorelog-Supported Recovery

Meaning is reconstructed through historical or narrative archival fragments.

Common sources:

• Lorelog incident entries,
• case-number adjacency,
• filing notes,
• cross-reference chains,
• repeated bureaucratic phrasing.

4. Residual Object Recovery

Meaning is inferred from low-confidence artifacts or objects that are heavily referenced but weakly defined.

Common sources:

• seals,
• icons,
• pseudo-forms,
• absent templates,
• confidence objects,
• symbolic placeholders.

5. Managed-Absence Recovery

Meaning is reconstructed by classifying what is missing, superseded, retired, unlocatable, or no longer interpretively surfaced.

Common sources:

• CAAR, LCGU, STCP, AAOA conditions,
• post-threshold archival states,
• withdrawn fields still shaping behavior,
• obligations persisting after form death.

Recovery Thresholds

Full Recovery Not Claimed

The default threshold. Enough is restored to challenge the headline account, not to replace uncertainty.

Partial Recovery Achieved

Some structure is reconstructed:

• burden class,
• contradiction type,
• likely sequence,
• interpretive limits.

Context Recovery Only

Only the surrounding conditions can be rebuilt. The event core remains thin.

Confidence Recovery

The archive can show that certainty was overstated, even if the underlying truth remains unresolved.

Non-Recoverable but Contested

Not enough survives to reconstruct meaning, but enough survives to refuse the official simplification.

Evidence Sources

Permissible sources for Annex Recovery include:

Preferred evidence has one or more of the following:

5. Reconstruct the narrowest possible contradiction or burden frame.
6. Attach confidence language.
7. Preserve what cannot be concluded.

Annex Recovery is invalid if it overclaims certainty in reaction to surface simplification.

Minimum Recovery Output

Every recovery record should specify:

• what the headline account claims,
• what secondary traces challenge or complicate it,
• what class of recovery was used,
• what remains uncertain,
• whether the recovered meaning is operational, archival, or symbolic only.

Common Recovery Targets

Annex Recovery is especially appropriate when surface records claim:

• rest occurred, but no interval exists,
• care succeeded, but relief was never assessed,
• silence meant health, but burden traces cluster nearby,
• a form existed, but no canonical copy survives,
• a seal implied assurance, but its meaning is unrecoverable,
• a dashboard improved, but the source categories were merged,
• a missing object was strategically renamed into presence.

Recovery Romanticism

Secondary traces are treated as more complete than they are.

Residue Overfit

A small symbolic fragment is forced to explain too much.

Narrative archive material overwhelms surviving primary records without sufficient linkage.

Because side-channel material feels truer, it is granted total authority.

Relation to Low-Confidence Objects

Low-Confidence Objects often trigger Annex Recovery because they produce effects stronger than their surviving definitions.

Examples:

• canonical references to templates no one can produce,
• icons treated as claims rather than decoration.

Where such objects influence classification, the archive should recover not what they meant ideally, but what they did operationally.

Relation to Dual Certification

Annex Recovery often reveals that a supposedly singular record was always dual-certified.

The recovery task is then not to create contradiction, but to uncover buried coexistence:

• one reading in dashboard,
• one in witness layer,
• one in filing notes,
• one in procedural workaround.

If coexistence is demonstrated, the record should be reclassified accordingly.

Relation to Managed Absence

Managed Absence is not the enemy of recovery. It is often recovery’s map.
